What is a Giclee

One of the most popular questions asked to me at art shows is... What is a Giclee?  It is funny because I was an artist long before I even new what one was. I had heard the term thrown around at art auctions and at different venues, and so the research began.
A Giclee is a process of printing.  The process goes something like this, often an artist will want to make prints of their work.  A typical printer can make prints but color matching on a regular printer would be very challenging.  This would especially be the case with art work such as oils where colors blend creating their own tonal values.  So an artist takes their work to a photographer or someone who has high capacity scanning machines and has their piece of art work scanned or photographed.  Whether it is scanned or photographed often depends on the size and texture of the painting.
After the piece of art has been scanned it is now put into a computer to be colored matched.  This is usually a visual process of the artist making sure that the colors are all true to the original.  Then the art is sent to a commercial printer that utilizes several colors to create the replica of the artist work.  A typical market printer only has 4 colors. The ink used in a Giclee is also a special formula of ink that is fade resistant and Uva radiation protected allowing the images to withstand longer if in the sunlight.  As with most images I always recommend a wall not in direct sunlight regardless.   One of the other attributes that makes these prints special is the type of paper used to create the print.  Most Giclee prints are made on archival paper or on Canvas.  This paper is acid free and specially formulated to hold strong through the years.
